Halloween Tutorial | Washed Up Mermaid

It's that season again! Hello pumpkins and goodbye sunshine. I'm super exited about this look as it's creepy but sexy at the same time which is pretty rare if I'm being honest. If you wanting a more bloody or gory look check out my dead prom queen tutorial from last year. I came up with this costume idea after I dyed my hair "Washed up mermaid" colour but more about that here.

What You Need:

BASICS:

Face paint, Eyeliner (liquid and pencil), Mascara, Blue/ Green Eyeshadow (creme and power), Blue Glitter, Liquid Latex. Brushes and Sponges as necessary.

Optional:

Fake Eyelashes
Sliver Lip Gloss

Firstly:

Using your cheap face paint set mix green and white together to create a kind of seaweed colour and spread it around you face but make sure you leave your eyelids and a little bit under your eye uncovered.

I had to include this picture because it's hilarious

Then:

Using a white face crayon or whatever its called, contour your face like you usually would with bronzer or highlighter. Mark your check bone a little more then usual because scary things always have more defined cheekbones.

With your lightest glitter use the white line you just drew as a template to stick your glitter. Luckily my paint was still wet at this point so it suck straight away but if it's not just add a little water or more paint or whatever sticky stuff you want. (haha)

Now For The Eyes

Now using any blue eyeshadow, preferably a cream shadow (I used Mayblline's Colour Tattoo in Turquoise Forever) cover your whole eyelid up to your brow and make sure its really visible.

At this point my camera ran out of battery and although I'm a confidant person walking to the shops like this was not an appealing option so I started using my laptop photo booth. #donthate

For under your eye take a silver cream liner or shadow I used (Topshop Grunge stick) and draw a really thick line, enlarge the flick at the end to make it just touch your eyebrows. This gives your eyes bigger and more fishy looking, because well mermaids are fish...kinda.

Just like normal eyeshadow, you need to shadow your crease using a more green tone to contrast against the blue.

Don't forget to add a bit of eyeliner just to give this look a slightly sexy feel even dead mermaids can be hot.

False leashes are not a must for this look but they do add a little pop to your eyes and if you can find blue ones they'll be the best. For everyone thats not an expert at fake lashes it took me 3 attempts to get these on and I almost had a hissy fit.......almost.

Eyebrows are a centre aspect of your face so why not make them sparkle a little... literally. Dab some leftover green paint or water on your brows to help the glitter stick and glitter up them bad boys.

Lips

Dark lips really give this look the gothic look it needs. If you have a dark purple or even black lipstick then it'll be perfect but I just used a black coloured face crayon thing. Colour in all your lips neatly because this stuff is hard to correct.

More Glitter!

Add some more water or paint to the lower part of your cheeks and draw a slightly thicker glitter line using a different colour or shade from what you used on your cheekbones.

This Gets Messy

Using liquid Latex dab little blobs down on your forehead making sure you put enough to make it 3D and then using your darkest glitter stick it to the latex. Don't worry if you get glitter everywhere thats totally supposed to happen.

Now do the same for the rest of your forehead this gives the look of scales coming out of your hair.

Final Touchups

Firstly make sure your green paint is still all even and theres not big lumps of green, then using a liquid silver liner smudge a silver top coat on your lips to make them slightly grey and dead looking.

Now let your hair flow free girl and embrace your greenish scaly beauty!

By the way I hope you guys noticed the cute halloween bunting I put in the back ground that literally took 10 minuets to hang up so it was in shot!

Dead Prom Queen Halloween Tutorial

I was pretty stuck this year when I was thinking about my costume, for many years I have been going as slutty rather than scary and I wanted to mix things up. What's more scary then a bratty high school prom queen who is back from the dead?   I was never voted prom queen in high school so this is my way of getting back (just kidding....or am I?)

Top tip before we start, use brushes that you don't mind ruining!

Firstly I painted my whole face white with just white face paint (please don't use real paint I know its obvious but just incase) try and go for a more moist paint, it makes smudging a lot easier. For the parts that didn't go white very well I put a whitish nude eyeshadow on.

I then applied black eyeshadow very roughly on my eyelids, you don't have to make it look like you're actually going to prom. If you're wondering I used Urban Decay "Blackout" because it's far to dark for me to use with normal makeup. I then lightly put a line of the same shadow my the bottom of my eye.

To make my eyes look more bruised and dead like I put purple cream eyeshadow under my eye as well and smudged it into the black eyeshadow. Do the same to your eyelids as well to give yourself 2 very black eyes.

Then I applied my usual eyeliner on my waterline, try and avoid touching your face when you do it or else you'll smudge your paint off! Then using a liquid eyeliner give yourself a cat wing on your eyelids.

Then put on a pair of big long black...eyelashes ;) eyelashes can be difficult to work with but use the cat eye you made with the liquid liner as a guide. They will made your eyes pop and look really dramatic.

Halloween just isn't the same without a little or a lot of sparkle, even if you are trying to be scary. I used Urban Decay's Glitter Glaze and applied it under my eye and on my eyelid. It is a little thick or I smudged it into the eye shadow to add to the bruising.

Then going back to the trusty black eyeshadow, I put a thick amount under my eyes and smudged in down my face. This will make it look like you've been crying a lot because well....you're dead.

I then put mascara on my bottom lashes and a little on my top ones, becuase you've still gotta look glamours, you weren't voted prom queen for nothing.

I then filled my eyebrows in with the black eye shadow to give myself a more haunted look as the black contrasts to the white paint.

Now to give your lips the bloody attention they need (not swearing I genially mean bloody) First outline your lips with a red lip liner it doesn't matter if its messy, it one corner of your mount colour it outside the line to make it look like your lip has been slip open. I then used Benefits Bene Tint, I used this instead of red lipstick on my lips and corner of my mouth because I thought it gave it a more bleeding effect.

This is where the fun really starts in the form of fake blood, you can really do anything with it. I used it a dramatize my split lip by putting it on my finger tips and rubbing the blood along the cut. I then got a bit excited and carried away and decided to cut my cheek up and put some blood on the side of my forehead.

I decided to make the blood on my forehead into a bruise by adding some Bene Tint to it to make it look more red and outlining it with black eyeshadow. By mixing the black and red together a kinda purply red colour is made making it look like a fresh blow to the head.

Now for hair, I wanted to have it up as It means more of my horrendous face is on show! I put it in a messy high pony tail and using a high donut I put it into a bun.

Once my hair was nice and tidy in the bun I proceeded to pull bits of hair out of it to make it look like i've been running for my life.

This is a perfect time to crown yourself queen, enjoy this moment it might be your last. Make sure you pin it on tightly especially if you going on a night out with it, we all know what drunk people are like.  (Crown was £5 from Claire's)

Put your outfit on (mine was £20 off Ebay) and get ready to make everyone shit themselves!

Happy Halloween Everyone! What are you planning on going as? xx
